Yoga Class Etiquette
Share
Yoga is a restorative practice - yes, even the intense classes - that works to bring balance to the body, mind, and spirit. As such, the studio space is often considered a special place where students are able to let go of tension. I have often been told how someone only needs to walk into the space and they feel better immediately. This is true, in part, because of how we collectively behave and take care of the space.
There are unofficial rules that help to maintain the positive energy of a yoga studio. Read below to make sure you are following yoga class etiquette!
Cell phones off please!
Did you know that even if your phone is placed face down beside you, it still reduces cognitive capacity. Your mind cannot rest because it is resisting the urge to check the phone. We all know that we go to yoga to unplug and to recharge. When a cell phone goes off or even just vibrates, it is disruptive to the entire class, not only because of the noise but because of its effect on the cognitive capacity of the students. When one cell phone indicates a message, the rest of the class unconsciously starts thinking about their own phone and whether or not there may be message waiting for them.
Please respect the other members of the class by turning your phone off or on airplane mode.
Once in a while, you may be in a situation where you need your phone close by. Completely understandable! In this situation, let the teacher and the class know beforehand so that they are aware of a possible disruption.
Respect other students' mats.
A person's yoga mat is their personal space within a classroom. It is their "home" within the studio for the next hour. You would never just walk into another person's home without permission. Likewise, never walk on another student's mat unless you have been given permission.
When walking around a yoga studio, walk around mats instead of across them.
Arrive at least 5 minutes early.
Being prepared for a yoga class is more than simply walking into the studio classroom. You have to store your belongings, find a location, unroll your mat, and collect necessary props. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to make sure you have enough time to do this. When you walk into the classroom right as class starts, you are disrupting the entire classroom. Although the teacher will start class, everyone is focused on the noises and activities of the late student.
Please respect other students' time by being prepared for class at least 5 minutes before the start time.
Respect the studio space.
Every single prop you use costs money. If props are destroyed, new ones need to be purchased. Please respect the studio's props. If you use a studio mat, clean it after class, roll it up tightly, and return it to the mat holder. Be aware of how you use the blocks. Try not to dig fingernails into the soft material as this wears them down quicker. Always remove shoes before entering the studio. This maintains a clean space and preserves the flooring. If you make a mess, no problem! Let the teacher know and she can provide the necessary materials to clean up.
The studio space belongs to everyone - respect it accordingly.
As long as we follow these rules, our studio will continue to be a safe haven! If you have questions or any concerns, please address the teacher and allow her to handle situations that arise.
