Solo Student in Yoga Class: The Definitive How To Guide
Share
You know the moment... Class time is quickly approaching, you look around, and you are the only student in class. If you're anything like me, the mind starts overthinking right about now As a student, I am thinking: Is this ok? Is this awkward? Does the teacher hate this? Maybe I should just leave? <Cringe>
We come to yoga to find community and practice as a group. When you happen to be the only student in class, it can feel unnerving, because we don't know what the expectations are for this type of situation. I feel you!
As The Salty Blossom Studio gets going, there have been several classes where it's just me and one or two other students. I have been very lucky in the past few weeks to have solo lessons with a few great students, who taught me how to find incredible joy when this happens. Let's talk through the situation so that you will feel comfortable when you are lucky enough to have a solo class!
The Definitive Guide on How to Be a Solo Yoga Student with Great Joy!
- First of all, let's clear the air. As a teacher, it is a luxury to have the opportunity to teach one student! I get to connect on a deeper level; we get to know each other better; I can adjust the class to meet your specific needs. Rest assured that I am excited to "just teach you". I do not feel disappointed. I do not need you to leave.
- Revel in the opportunity! People pay anywhere from $50 to a few hundred dollars for private yoga classes! How incredibly lucky that you get to have that opportunity for the cost of a regular class. Take advantage of the situation!
- Ask all of your questions. What are the things you have been wondering during a yoga class that you felt too uncomfortable to say out loud? Is there verbiage I use that makes no sense to you? Are you unsure about foot placement or how to modify a pose? Now's the time. You will not be interrupting anyone else's practice. Ask all of your questions as the class progresses. Just speak up as we go!
- Focus on a pose. What is the pose that you have been wanting to understand or learn for months? You can now have personalized attention! We have the time for me to workshop the specifics of a pose as well as to help you get deeper into it. Yoga workshops like this cost hundreds of dollars. Here we are just the two of us - let's get it done!
- The choice is always yours. Having said all of those wonderful things about being a solo student, also know that the choice is yours. If you feel uncomfortable, you do not have to stay. This will not offend me or change my opinion about you in any way.
The solo classes I have taught since opening the Studio have been some of my most fulfilling memories so far. The joy and connection are simply the best. I admit that I can't wait until my classes are full, but there is a part of me that will always crave the joy of an unexpected opportunity to get to know you better.
So bring it on! As the studio grows, let's immerse ourselves in the present moment, regardless of what that looks like. I'm here for it, and I can't wait to work with you.
